The "Old Town" with its striking red Nakabashi Bridge over the Miyagawa River is a popular tourist spot in the Hida area, where you can enjoy a stroll while admiring the atmospheric scenery. Another attraction is browsing the shops packed with folk crafts and local specialties, or sampling some easy snacks like grilled beef skewers and mitarashi dango (sweet rice dumplings) while walking around. Along the Miyagawa River, the "Miyagawa Morning Market," known as one of Japan's three largest morning markets, opens early in the morning.
The Takayama Festival, one of Japan's three most beautiful festivals, is held in spring and autumn, making it a city worth visiting multiple times throughout the year.
